Botticelli’s Venus
Just ten days left to see Botticelli’s Venus at the Hong Kong University Museum and Art Gallery. Admission is free and it’s a great opportunity to take a look around the rest of the collection in the impressive colonial building with its dark red walls and creaking wooden floorboards.
As a word of forewarning, do not expect to see the more widely known painting The Birth of Venus or you will be disappointed. Venus is an earlier work by the renaissance artist which depicts the same model used in his later more famous work. The muse’s name was Simonetta Vespucci, an aristocratic socialite who was said to be the most beautiful woman of her time and with whom Botticelli was rumoured to be in love with.
Venus was painted in 1482 and stands at 174cm tall. A must see.
