Flat UI
A growing digital design trend for 2014 seems to be flat user interfaces. Windows 8 was really influential in this regard, and then Apple ditched skeuomorphism when it launched iOS7. Skeuomorphisma is a physical ornament or design on an object made to resemble another material or technique. An example of this in OS was the leather stitching effect in the iCal app. The change of the icons in IOS7 to mimic Windows flat style icons further reinforced the move toward this trend.
However this is not to say that there is no place in design for more complex graphical features in user interfaces or websites. Each project requires an individual assessment of the style that fits its feel and brand message.
